Cannabidiol (CBD) health and wellness products have grown incredibly popular in recent years. While most people use CBD oil, there are also vape oils and pens available.

These products are preferred by vape enthusiasts and those looking for immediate effects. Unfortunately, high-quality CBD vape products are notoriously difficult to find. Many contain less CBD than advertised, the wrong type of extract, or potentially harmful ingredients.

To help you make an informed choice, we compared dozens of products to find the best CBD vape oils and pens.

Why you should be cautious about vaping CBD

There’s been much controversy about the risks of low-quality vape products, highlighted by the 2019-2020 outbreak of e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI).

Although this outbreak was mainly caused by cannabis vapes containing vitamin E acetate, it’s possible for low-quality CBD vapes to be contain other harmful additives, such as phytol.

That’s why you should only buy CBD vapes and e-liquids from reputable brands that provide complete third-party potency and contaminant test results and check the list of ingredients for anything suspicious.

Even if you use high-quality products, vaping still carries some health risks. As one group of researchers put it, “Taking up vaping is not safe…The human lungs are created to breathe clean air.”

We recommend choosing CBD oil, gummies, or capsules instead. But if you’re still interested in vaping CBD, we’ve reviewed the best products below.

Methodology: How we chose the best CBD vape products

When choosing CBD products, we consider multiple factors to find the most affordable, effective, and safe options.

Here’s a closer look at our process.

Data collection and rating

Leafreport collects data on each CBD product, including it’s price, CBD extract type, additional ingredients, hemp quality, and third-party lab test reports. Using these criteria, we give each product and CBD brand an objective rating, which also acts as a quick, unbiased review.

Leafreport’s database provides information and ratings for thousands of CBD products from hundreds of brands, making it easy to search and compare different options.

Our ultimate goal is to empower consumers with the information needed to make an educated buying decision in a confusing industry.

Review process

We check products directly from brands so we can try them out before writing reviews and making recommendations. We consider several criteria when reviewing CBD products. Each of the below areas is given an unbiased score, which adds up to a maximum of 100 points altogether:

  • Quality assurance. We check third-party lab test reports to see if the product’s levels of CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids match the label.
  • Hemp quality. We look for products made from organic, pesticide-free, sustainably grown hemp, giving extra points for USDA organic certification.
  • Extract type. CBD comes in three types: full, broad-spectrum, and isolate. Full-spectrum products are considered the most effective thanks to providing a full range of hemp cannabinoids and other beneficial compounds.
  • Additional ingredients. Many CBD products contain additional cannabinoids, terpenes, and added active ingredients such as melatonin.
  • Prices. We measure the price per mg of CBD, giving higher ratings to affordably priced products.

Content updates

We review CBD products on an annual basis and continually make updates throughout the year to provide the most accurate and helpful information. For example, we update our product recommendations whenever CBD brands change, discontinue, or offer new products.

Our review team

Leafreport’s review team is made up of professional writers knowledgeable about the CBD industry. Many of our contributors have medical degrees, statistical knowledge, and other relevant experience. Additionally, every Leafreport review is thoroughly vetted by medical reviewers to ensure accurate, science-based information.

Conflicts of interest

While Leafreport does have partnerships with many of the reviewed brands, they don’t affect our writers or the review process. We don’t receive any compensation for writing reviews and our goal is always to provide unbiased information. In fact, you can find plenty of negative reviews on our website.

Disclaimer: Our recommendations are not intended to substitute for or act as medical advice.

Market reports

Another way Leafreport stands out from other CBD review websites is our evidence-based market reports. For each one, we purchase different types of CBD products and send them for independent lab testing to check whether their levels of CBD and other cannabinoids match the label.

For example, we’ve done a report on Delta-8, as well as a summary that combines the results of six individual reports to give an overview of the state of transparency and accuracy in the CBD industry.

We’ve also done other types of reports, including one on CBD prices to help shoppers save money on CBD.

Most of the CBD vape products you’ll come across contain pure CBD. It’s not as effective as full-spectrum extracts which contain all of the hemp’s beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes.

The vape oil from Harmony CBD is a proper full-spectrum CBD product. It’s also one of the only vape products on the CBD market that’s certified organic by the USDA.

Founded in 2015, Harmony CBD is an established brand with a good reputation. If you’re looking for organic products made by a transparent company, Harmony is an excellent choice. It grows and extracts its own organic-certified hemp in South Carolina with sustainable farming methods.

How to choose the best CBD vape oils and pens

Keep these tips in mind when looking for the right, high-quality CBD vape juice or pen:

  • Third-party testing: Reputable brands send their products for testing at an independent lab to verify their potency and purity. You should only buy third-party tested products.
  • Type of CBD: There are three kinds of CBD; isolate, full-spectrum, and broad-spectrum. Research suggests that full-spectrum CBD is the most effective because it contains all of the cannabinoids and terpenes found in cannabis. However, if you need to avoid THC, opt for isolate or broad-spectrum products.
  • Ingredients: Most CBD vapes contain CBD isolate and flavoring dissolved in a base of vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG). Sometimes, terpenes or whole-plant hemp extract are added. Check the ingredients list to avoid potentially harmful substances such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) and MCT oil.
  • Product type: Beginners are best suited by disposable vape pens or vape kits, whereas experienced vapers may prefer to buy CBD e-liquid.
  • Potency: potency is the concentration of CBD in a product (milligrams per milliliter for vape oil). After you figure out what CBD dosage works best for you, look for a vape product that provides at least that much CBD per ml.
  • Price: CBD is not cheap, especially if you’re taking it daily. Be sure to look at the price per mg of CBD to compare different products and see if you’re getting a good deal.

These tips are just a starting point. Check out our detailed guide for a full explanation of how to find reputable CBD companies and choose the best products.

Safety and side effects

According to the research, CBD is a safe compound with few and minor side effects. Studies report that the most common side effects of CBD are:

  • Tiredness and drowsiness
  • Diarrhea and nausea
  • Low blood pressure and lightheadedness
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Dry mouth

CBD can also interact with many prescription drugs, so it’s best to talk to your doctor before using it. Still, these and other potential side effects are associated with very large oral doses of purified CBD. This means they’re unlikely to occur for most CBD users.

However, there are some risks associated with vaping. Most notably, a comprehensive 2018 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found that vaping can produce potentially toxic substances such as formaldehyde.

Similarly, a 2020 review paper concluded that “the current scientific consensus is that e-cigarettes are probably safer than conventional cigarettes, but e-cigarettes are not without harm…Taking up vaping is not safe.”

It’s also possible for low-quality vape products to contain potentially harmful additives, such as phytol.

Legality

Hemp-derived CBD products (with 0.3% or less delta-9 THC) are federally legal in the United States. However, a few states have more restrictive laws. Some ban CBD completely or only allow THC-free products, so it’s best to research the particular state you’re curious about.
