The bottom line

My overall rating of the Joy Organics products was excellent. It was a great customer/buying experience from start to finish. I was most impressed with the lab reports, which are very detailed; 12 pages in some cases. As I delved into learning more about Joy Organics, I could tell that the company had superior manufacturing processes in addition to offering organic non-GMO hemp farmed using state of the art agricultural methods. The product line is small but excellent, and Joy offers some products you typically don’t see, like energy drink mix. The pricing is very reasonable, ranging from $7 to $100 for individual products ($0.08-0.26 per mg CBD). I ordered the softgels, salve and tincture.

I really liked the personal story of how the Smiths founded Joy Organics. It helped me really relate to and trust that I was getting a quality product. They use trusted sources, and I had a wonderful buying and shipping experience. The products were easy to order and arrived fast. The website has lots of great information that is easy to navigate. I particularly liked that every product type had its own introductory video and that the lab report links were so prominent on the site.

Pros: Cons:
  • Thorough lab testing by Joy Organics internal quality engineers. Each product is also tested by up to three labs.
  • Transparent labeling of ingredients, certifications and QR code that link to lab results
  • Educational videos and material are prominent on the site
  • Better Business Bureau accredited business
  • FAQ page could use more information
  • They do not offer international shipping

About The Company

Joy Organics founder Joy Smith began having health issues like sleep disturbances and other issues and discovered CBD by accident. She wanted a natural product, and her son suggested CBD. She purchased quite a few brands but didn’t find exactly what she was looking for. Smith and her husband had a history of entrepreneurship, Joy’s husband Todd is the co-founder of Joy Organics and already had nearly 30 years of experience in a large health company. Her son already owned a digital marketing agency, so the family felt they could make their place in the booming CBD industry. They founded Joy Organics in Fort Collins, Colorado. Both of Joy’s daughters now also work for the company, so it is truly a family run affair, and the company website says they have nearly 70 employees.

I ordered three products: (1) premium hemp softgels (2) premium hemp tincture and (3) CBD salve. The labels are simply designed but elegant and are very straightforward. For example, the salve label clearly tells you that you are getting a 2-ounce jar of savle that has 1000mg hemp extract. The premium softgels are 30 per bottle with 25 mg/softgel. The tincture and softgel clearly state THC-free on the labels. The products are also clearly labeled as non-GMO, broad spectrum and high absorption. Ingredients are clearly listed for all three products and there is even a warning stamp on each package that the products contain coconut (in the form of MCT oil) to help people with allergies better identify ingredients. I don’t have these allergies but my mother does, so I thought this was a nice touch.

Serving sizes and servings per container as well as amount of CBD per serving are listed. They even list the calories in each softgel, not something you often see on a CBD product label. All three products were labeled THC free, and the lab reports for all three verified zero THC as well as zero THC derivatives. Regarding CBD content, using the softgels as an example, the capsule was supposed to contain 25mg phytocannabinoids; according to the lab report, the capsules actually had more: 27.2 mg.

Regarding pricing, the 1500mg CBD per bottle (1 ounce bottle) is priced at about $100 ($0.07 per mg CBD). The softgels (25 mg/softgel) was $75 for a bottle of 30 softgels ($0.1 per mg CBD). The 1000mg 2 ounce salve jar was priced at $80 ($0.11 per mg CBD).

The website is very straightforward to use. Consumers can shop products, read a company profile or learn about CBD. Information about Joy Organics locations and partnership programs is easily accessible. They offer free shipping on every product and a 30-day money back guarantee on all products as well.

Regarding lab results, the packaging and labels clearly state that the products are tested by third party labs and there is a QR code on each box. In some circumstances, they direct consumers to visit JoyOrganics.com/labs to look for lab results.

Manufacturing Process

Joy Organics products are created using pharmaceutical grade CBD. The company website provides great detail about their 7 steps to a superior CBD product. The first step involves superior farming techniques. Their hemp is grown in the United States in nutrient rich soil using state of the art farming processes to enhance the quality of the proprietary hemp strains they grow. They make sure that consumers know they are fully compliant with the Farm Bill of 2018, newly passed legislation allowing hemp to be grown anywhere in the United States as long as the THC content is below 0.3 percent.

Step 2 details their raw hemp processing techniques. After harvesting, the plants are dried and milled into a course powder using GMP processes certified by the FDA. The company clearly prides itself on adhering to the highest industry standards, and they feature quite a bit of information about that on their website. After the product is milled, the resulting powder is shipped to Fort Collins, Colorado the location of their processing and manufacturing facility. This is where Step 3 takes place. Joy Organics utilizes a proprietary extraction and purification process. They use supercritical CO2 methods, commonly used in the industry. They prepare a full spectrum (broad spectrum) product that preserves all of the CBD as well as other beneficial phytocannabinoids found in hemp. The broad spectrum products also preserve terpenes and flavonoids, and the products are advertised as THC free. CBD offers its own benefits, but many people believe there is extra benefit available from broad spectrum products like those offered by Joy Organics because of the entourage effect encountered when all of the cannabinoids are working together. After extraction, plant solids that are unwanted in the final product are removed. Unwanted plant solids include certain plant pigments, chlorophyll and waxes. Part of the CO2 extraction process involves separating the hemp extract from the supercritical CO2 (Step 4). After separation, the CO2 is recycled and used to extract CBD and other phytocannabinoids from subsequent batches of dry ground plants.

Step 5 is a very important step and one that is fairly unique to Joy Organics. They use proprietary technology to remove even the smallest traces of THC so that the final product has no detectable THC. Step 6 is the third party lab testing which we talk about in the section below. Joy’s last step involves the use of proprietary nanoemulsion technology to further process the oil used in their softgel products. Basically, the process transforms the raw hemp oil into a nano-emulsion to increase CBD and phytochemical bioavailability for more effective absorption. The company advertises the product as the “most bioavailable broad spectrum CBD in the industry.” They describe their nanoparticles as 25 nanometers in size, whereas their competitors are between 100 and 1000 nanometers in size. The company states that consumers can use less product to achieve the same benefit. They also use other proprietary technology in other products to make a water soluble hemp powder that they use in products like their energy mix and their dog treats.

Lab Testing

Each batch of Joy Organics hemp oil is lab tested by a third party laboratory. The company uses different labs for different products/batches. Pixis Labs in Portland, Oregon is a full service testing lab that tests everything from food to wastewater. They are well known and ISO/IEC 17025:2005 certified to carry out these tests. Pixis is accredited by the Oregon Environmental Laboratory Accreditations Program (ORELAP) as well as having several other accreditations from the State of Washington. Joy also uses labs like Aurum Labs and Denver based Phytatech.

Joy Organics has a QR code on every label. That QR code leads the consumer to the Joy Organics lab reports on their website. For example, the QR code on the tincture bottle I ordered took me to the Joy Organics website and a list of batch lab reports for each product (tincture in this case). Getting to the lab report is very straightforward. Joy Organics refers the customer to the bottom of the bottle, where the batch number is clearly printed, along with an expiration date. It is very easy to then find the batch number, click on it and go to the report.

When I clicked on the link, I was pleasantly surprised to get a 12 page report. The first pages are Joy Organic’s own Quality Assurance (QA) report (Certificate of Quality Assurance), then it appears the batch is tested by three different labs. In this case, the tincture was tested by Pixis, Cloud Labs and Anresco Laboratories. For example, the Anresco report gives results of heavy metal screening for arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium. Cloud Labs tested for bacterial contaminants like E. coli and salmonella, and also performed the cannabinoid analysis to show CBD and to verify that the product is both THC free and free from THCa and THCv. Cloud also provided the most detailed chemical residue analysis I’ve seen, testing for over 60 chemicals like pesticides Malathion and Diazinon and other harmful chemicals such as pyrethrins. Pixis provided the lab tests for terpene content covering limonene and myrcene along with over 40 additional terpenes. Their lab testing is definitely as rigorous as advertised. The company states they’ve “set a new bar of testing in the industry” and I believe it. Every batch seems to be comprehensively tested by three labs that measure various characteristics of the batch.

For the 25mg CBD softgels, the lab report actually stated 27.2 mg CBD per softgel, a 2.2% deviation in labeled vs. actual values.

Range of Products

Joy Organics offers a wide range of products, including the traditional tinctures, softgels and creams and salves, the company also carries other unique and interesting products like bath products, energy drink powder and pet products.

Joy Organics says that all CBD products are not created equally. They say this is something Joy herself figured out early on, so she set exceptionally high standards from the very beginning, such as using the seven step process I’ve already outlined above.

Here is a product overview.

Softgels

Softgels are available in bottles of 30; they offer 10mg/capsule and 25mg/capsule of CBD for a total of 300mg per bottle and 750 mg per bottle, respectively. They also offer CBD softgels with curcumin and another product with melatonin. The curcumin product is advertised as supporting healthy joints, and the melatonin product promotes relaxation and healthy sleep. The lab report links are prominent for every product and there is even a softgel video overview, which explains the nanoemulsion process for making the CBD in softgels more water soluble for better absorption. I ordered the 25mg regular softgels, and these softgels were easy to swallow, as advertised. The best part for me was that they offer a try before you buy sample pack that includes two packets of softgels (so four 10mg softgels). It even comes with a sample of their salve all for $7, so it is an attractive price.

Product Name Size Potency [mg] Price [$] Price/mg CBD [$/mg]

Topicals

Joy Organics offers salve, cream and a salve stick. I ordered the salve jar, which is a lavender eucalyptus 1000mg hemp extract product that is two ounces in volume. There is also a one ounce 500mg jar. The salves are advertised to provide targeted relief for joint pain and inflammation and are made using all natural ingredients like hemp oil, essential oils and beeswax. They even have a CBD salve stick that is unscented rather than the lavender eucalyptus blend. The final topical product is their CBD unscented moisturizing cream that contains 250mg CBD plus other nourishing seed oils like olive oil. It also contains safflower fats, glycerin and aloe leaf juice.

Pet Products

The company offers two different pet products, a tincture and CBD pet treats. The beef flavored pet treats come in a 30 count jar with 2mg of hemp extract per chew for a 60mg total. The treats contain the water soluble hemp powder that Joy Organics is known for. The pet tinctures come in one ounce (30 ml) bottles in both a 250mg and 500 mg option, and are manufactured using the same broad spectrum hemp oil as the treats.

Buying Experience

I ordered my products online since I am not near one of their brick and mortar store fronts. The website was very easy to navigate and each product description had both an educational video and lab report prominently displayed. The overall buying process was very easy and straightforward. Every product ships free via USPS 5-7 day shipping. For $10 extra, customers can purchase expedited 2-3 day shipping.

My product box arrived quickly, and was nicely packaged with a receipt. It contained three smaller boxes. The company’s return policy is a bit hard to find but they do offer a 30 day money back guarantee on all products if you’re not completely satisfied.

I ordered the tincture, salve and softgels and products were shipped within one or two days of my order. The unboxing was good and I got everything that I expected. My order arrived in a very discreet shipping box as well.

Products Reviewed

As mentioned, I ordered the CBD salve. The box directions suggested applying a small amount as needed on the affected joint area. The product is packaged in a dark amber jar, but the directions instruct it should be stored away from sunlight, heat and humidity. The lavender eucalyptus salve had a very nice smell.

I also ordered the 25mg softgels. They are easy to swallow and had no aftertaste like some softgels do. The recommended dose is one softgel. The package explains that these are broad spectrum, meaning they also contain other cannabinoids in addition to CBD as well as terpenes and flavonoids.

The final product I ordered was the tincture. I’ve used quite a few tinctures and this one exceeded expectations. The recommendation is to use one dropperful. The orange flavor helped to reduce the earthiness of the broad spectrum tincture. The oil appears to be very pure, just like the label says. The only addition is orange essential oil and MCT (medium chain triglyceride) coconut oil that is certified as organic. The company does put a warning label on the bottle notifying consumers that it does contain coconut to alert people who may have this specific food allergy. The coconut oil used is organic. Joy uses minimal processing for their CBD oil. I can tell by the taste and I am happy to pay for that level of quality.
