The Bottom Line

My review of Out & About CBD is below average. The good news is that all of the ingredients used in their broad spectrum and isolate, phytocannabinoid rich CBD oil are plant based. They source all of their CBD from hemp grown using sustainable and organic farming practices on U.S. farms. The company also uses MCT during formulation and CO2 extraction. Their gummies are also 100% vegan and organic.

They carry a wide variety of CBD potencies ranging from 2 mg to 1000 mg, but have few options in potency per product line. Their prices range from $19.95 up to $59.95, which equals a reasonable $.03 price per mg of CBD for their softgels and $.08 for their tinctures. Topicals, however, are priced at $.45 per mg of CBD. Out & About is definitely newer and higher priced than other comparable brands in the market, and they offer limited potency choices, with only one 500 mg tincture option.

Their customer service team is responsive and communicates mainly through email and online chat. A main company phone number is also prominently listed online for customers, as well as a physical address in California. Shipping is free with a minimum order of $50, which is easy to exceed due to the higher than average prices at Out & About. All products carry the company’s 30 day, money back satisfaction guarantee.

In today’s CBD market, accuracy in labeling is key to maintaining a quality brand, and also increases the chance of repeat customers being drawn back to a brand’s CBD products. The accuracy variance is broad for these Out & About products. Several products were not tested for standard residuals such as solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, or other foreign contaminants, so all of the products in this order did not have a complete panel of lab results posted.

Pros: Cons:
  • CBD education focus
  • QR codes on product labels
  • Giveback 5% of profits to LGBTQ nonprofits, such as The Trevor Project
  • Organic, vegan gummies
  • Offer specials and sales via direct email
  • Product and potency selection limited
  • High accuracy variances between label and actual CBD content
  • Inadequate testing for contaminants
  • No regular discounts

About the Company

In April 2020, the fledgling Out & About CBD line of wellness products were launched in Southern California and targeted specifically to the LGBT community. Their CBD product line up includes several traditional products, such as softgels, tinctures, topicals, pet chews, and gummies. They also feature several unique products, such as a new tropical fruit flavored sports drink mix and a water based personal lubricant for suggested use on sensitive areas of the body.

They sell directly to consumers through their own ecommerce site that is aggressively promoted in LGBTQ media and via influencers and social media. In the future, the company also intends to expand beyond their online platform and sell to a variety of retailers in leading LGBTQ neighborhoods, as well as to wellness outlets across the country. Out & About’s phytocannabinoid rich hemp CBD products contain zero THC and are sourced from U.S. farms, employing organic growing practices before being third party tested.

The company is all about “positive optimism” and is strongly committed to giving a minimum of 5% of all proceeds back to the LGBTQ community through nonprofits. According to their website, they are a corporate partner of The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth.

Transparency

The main Out & About website includes a prominently located FAQ page in the main dropdown menu, along with CBD dosage information and a link to an educational blog. It also contains comprehensive information on each individual product page.

Customers of this brand will immediately notice that official third party lab results are visible on a central COA page online for all products offered by Out & About. These results are available for download. The value of quality control and third party test results is driven by being quickly available to consumers. They provide access to the results for every product in one main table for easy customer reference.

Out & About tests most of their product line for CBD potency, overall cannabinoid content, and terpene profile, as well as for heavy metals, microbes, pathogens such as E. coli, and any residual solvents leftover from the extraction procedure and distillation process. Each of these categories is important for determining the potency, efficacy and safety of CBD products.

However, several of their products, specifically the warming salve, the lavender massage oil, the gummies, the intensive rub, and the mints were not tested for pesticides, solvents, microbials, or heavy metals. While tested for CBD and THC potency and terpene profiles, the specifically mentioned products had no third party lab results available for residuals or other contaminants.

Accuracy

Out & About is a legal, authorized grower of premium hemp that is sourced from top quality hemp farms across the United States, according to the company. They use a clean CO2 extraction process for all of their products.

Out & About third party tests their CBD products at a couple of labs who have ISO accreditation and then use this verified hemp to formulate products that live up to the standards for a high quality, broad spectrum CBD brand, according to the company.

However, due to the fact that there is a distinct discrepancy in accuracy between the Out & About product labels and the total CBD content found in their products, they currently fall short of being recognized as a true premium brand when compared to more established premium brands in the market. These lab results are readily provided on the “COA” page on the main company website online, with only the lab results for their sports drink mix currently unavailable due to it being a new product.

Otherwise, it was fairly easy to match my products to the COA lab reports neatly posted online using the batch numbers on my product labels and the scannable QR codes. I did have to request lab results from customer service for two of their products, and this process took over a week. There is room for improvement in their COA response time, in my opinion.

As far as the lab results for the 25 mg gummies, I found that this product had 26.73 mg of CBD per serving (1 gummy) with 20 servings per package. This is slightly more total CBD than the 500mg label with 534.60 mg total CBD, and it is under the acceptable 10% variance at 6.95%. No THC was detected in this product.

The independent third party lab report for my batch of their 750 mg natural softgel bottle had a high 28% variance with 963 mg total mg of CBD. A serving of their 25 mg product is 1 softgel, which the lab showed to have 32.1 mg CBD and a total of 0% THC per 25 mg dose. The melatonin softgels were far more accurate with 24.9 mg of CBD per serving, for a total of 747 mg of CBD in the 750 mg labeled product. This is a mere 0.4% variance, which barely registers on the acceptable 10% variance scale. This product is recommended to promote restful sleep, according to the company’s suggested use, and by far, it had the most accurate CBD labeling of the entire order.

The lab report for the 500 mg topical warming salve had a CBD variance of 44.56% with 722.8 mg of total CBD, which exceeds the 10% acceptable variance. It was well below the legal limit of 0.3% THC, however, measuring a non detectable quantity of 0%.

Their 300 mg edible mints had an acceptable 6.2% variance with 281.4 mg of total CBD on the third party test results, while their topical personal lubricant tested with an extremely high variance of 583.7% with 683.79 mg of total CBD in the 100 mg labeled product that is water based. All products in the order did test under the legal 0.3% THC limit, as advertised by the company.

Reputation

Out & About CBD was established in 2019 by former brand marketing executive Ralph Fascitelli and Wayne Carkeek, according to their website, with a company tagline of “Do good. Do Well.” They offer customers their quality PCR, broad spectrum and isolate CBD from hemp grown using organic farming and obtained using CO2 extraction.

Out & About offers consumers helpful CBD education tools for those who are seeking a natural approach to wellness and health, as noted on the company’s online home page. They strive, through these educational initiatives, to share the most current information regarding hemp CBD, and its uses, as well as precautions.

Manufacturing Process

They are a legal, authorized grower of premium U.S. hemp that contains pure PCR, or phytocannabinoid rich CBD oil. Out & About sources their products from farms in the United States and they formulate and manufacture their CBD products using a clean CO2 extraction process, as confirmed by the corresponding lab reports posted online.

To the best of our knowledge, Out & About does not operate in a GMP certified or GMP compliant manufacturing facility. Some of their products tested free of any contaminants, including harmful pesticides and herbicides. Not all products, however, were tested for these types of contaminants.

According to the company website, Out & About uses all natural plant product ingredients and organic farming practices to manufacture their CBD products.

Range of Products

They offer broad spectrum CBD, available in tinctures, gummies, isolate mints, softgels, several topicals, pet chews, and energy drink mixes. One of their products is 100% organic and vegan, and that is their gummies. Many of the products offered also contain various essential oils, including MCT, Arnica, and olive oil.

CBD Topicals

  • CBD Intensive Relief Rub

This potent 1000 mg topical product is recommended for use by the company before hiking or yoga, or for recovery from an intense gym session. Emu oil is added to this broad spectrum CBD oil formulation for maximum skin coverage and bioavailability in the body, as well as Arnica and other essential oils.

  • CBD Warming Salve

This 500 mg warming salve consists of a combination of premium botanicals and broad spectrum hemp CBD oil. It’s extracted using a CO2 method. The company suggests using this topical salve to nourish and soothe skin, as well as for targeted relief of achy, sore muscles.

  • CBD Personal Lubricant

This broad spectrum CBD product is recommended for topical, external use only by the company, and it is CO2 extracted. The company advertises this 100 mg product for use before and during sex. The label claims that it can promote better blood flow, but this is only a suggested use by Out & About. It is also safe to use this product on silicone or latex with no degradation of materials.

  • CBD Massage Oil + Lavender

Sweet almond and olive are added to this proprietary formulation of broad spectrum CBD oil and MCT oil for easy application. This CO2 extracted product offers maximum bioavailability, and blends of essential oils. It is a translucent liquid with a slight pale yellow hue. With no artificial dyes or fragrance either, the company’s suggested use for this product is to apply topically, or try adding a few drops to your bath for a soothing soak with restorative and relaxing benefits.

These mints are sugar free and are to be taken orally or sublingually.

The Out & About softgels advertise 25 mg per serving and a serving size is 1 softgel. The maximum recommended dosage is one to two softgels per day, according to the label.

These have no artificial ingredients, flavors, or colors, and they tested at 0% THC. Out & About recommends this product for a discreet dose of CBD that lasts longer than other delivery methods.

CBD Softgels + Melatonin

Melatonin is scientifically proven to help regulate sleep cycles, and the company suggests using these at night, two hours before bedtime to help consumers achieve a better night’s rest. A serving size is 1 softgel, which contains 25 mg of CBD and 1 mg of melatonin, according to the label and lab results.

They also recommend these sugar free drink mixes for use pre-workout or post-workout to alleviate sore and inflamed areas of the body. Because of the caffeine, ginseng, and vitamin B12, the company says that consumers of this product will notice a somewhat energizing effect with use.

Buying Experience

The ordering process was quick and efficient on their user friendly website. Their online catalog has product categories listed that were easy to navigate. Each product page provides comprehensive product information for each item in that product category, as well as suggested uses. As required by law, a full FDA disclaimer appears.

Quality assurance of Out & About products can be confirmed by consumers by viewing any of their independent third party lab reports posted clearly on the company website on the “COA” tab that appears at the bottom of every page. An FDA disclaimer is included on every product page. Initially, here was no COA posted for the company’s newly released energy drink mixes, and customer support was contacted regarding this matter.

Customers can easily find key information, and this helpful quick link toolbar appears at the top of every webpage on the Out & About site and enhances the customer experience:

Out & About CBD currently offers broad spectrum and isolate product choices, but has few options in potency per product line. Their prices range from $19.95 up to $59.95, which equals a reasonable $.03 price per mg of CBD for either of their softgel products, and $.08 for their tinctures. Topicals, at $.45 per mg of CBD, are priced much higher than other comparable brands in the market which average approximately $.15 maximum per mg of CBD.

If customers have a question or inquiry after viewing the comprehensive website, their customer service team is available via online chat, email, and phone. There is a physical location listed for Out & About CBD in Southern California. Their location also appears directly on the actual package received in the mail, and on the product labels and boxes themselves.

Customer service can answer questions about orders, order modifications, shipping, returns, and cancellations. They were contacted by email concerning missing third party lab testing results for two of my products and discounts available for customers. The company customer service team replied within 2 business days with the following email:

Shipping costs are dependent on the products ordered and your selected shipping method. A $50 order minimum is required for free shipping. The order was processed in about 2 days before being shipped via Priority Mail. Most orders will ship the same or next business day from the time of processing. A shipping confirmation email with a tracking number was received to assist in following its progress.

The order arrived in a white box within 5 business days of placing it online, but the package received was not discreet. The white packing tape around the entire box was emblazoned with the rainbow colored “Out & About” company name and logo. Others would definitely be able to see the CBD company name on the outside of the white Priority Mail package. The products were securely packaged with their signature confetti shreds of red, blue, and yellow, and the package contained individually boxed items. Out & About CBD products are all packaged in light resistant, opaque containers.

Products Reviewed

Mint Tincture, 500 mg, 30 ml

Their tincture is almost translucent with no yellow tinge and has an extremely thin viscosity. This product tastes very minty and refreshing, with no herbal or grassy aftertaste. The company’s suggested use is for topical massage of sore, tired muscles. This product is offered in orange flavor as well, but no potency besides 500 mg is offered by Out & About at this time.

The lab results posted for the mint flavor of this 500 mg tincture showed a 579.71 mg quantity of CBD, which is a variance of 15.94% and above the 10% acceptable variance. This product passed testing for all contaminants, solvents, and residues, and had a 0% THC level.
<h3id=”topicals”>Personal Lubricant, 100 mg, 6 oz

This product has a suggested use of lubricating sensitive areas of the skin, and is water soluble so external use is not a requirement. This product is recommended for topical use only. According to the company, this product can enhance intimacy by helping you and your partner feel relaxed, but no specific medical or health claims are made.

It is clear in appearance and thin, but does have a somewhat thicker viscosity than the massage oil, for example. It is quite moisture rich and residue does remain on your hand after application, but it is not greasy. It absorbs quickly into the skin. Labeled at 100 mg per 6 oz bottle, this product was independently verified as having an extremely high 683.79 mg of CBD, which is a variance of 583%, and is exceedingly over the 10% acceptable variance. The results did verify a non detectable amount of THC with 0%.

Warming Salve, 500 mg, 4 oz

This topical product is bright orange in appearance and seems to have separated during shipping. It is a thicker substance but does not quite have a salve consistency. The CBD oil is dark yellow and clearly visible, as it sits on top of the thicker product ingredients. Individual ingredient pieces are also visible within the container, as if it has separated, and vigorous stirring or blending of the product is required by the customer before application can be accomplished. It leaves a heavy oily residue on the skin even when mixed together thoroughly, and it is not smooth in texture or easily applied.

This is labeled as having 500 mg of CBD, but third party testing indicated 622.8 total mg in this 4 oz product. This is a 24.5% variance between the label and the actual contents, which is far above the 10% variance allowed. THC was not detected. The suggested use by the company is to apply liberally to clean skin for healthy skin and sore or achy muscles.

Massage Oil with Lavender, 60 mg, 4 oz

Again, the viscosity is so thin that some oil is wasted while attempting application. It drips easily down the bottle and into the pop up lid, making it slippery and difficult to keep a grasp on the bottle in order to dispense product. This is a phytocannabinoid rich CBD oil product and contains additional MCT oil, sweet almond oil, and olive oil. This massage product is free of perfumes and additives.

Suggested use by the company is to liberally apply topically to skin to relieve muscle soreness, achieve relaxation, and reap “regenerative and antioxidant benefits.” Labeled at 50 mg per bottle, this massage oil was independently verified at having 64.71mg of CBD, which is a variance of 29.42% and over the 10% acceptable variance. A non detectable amount, or 0%, THC was confirmed.

Softgels, 750 mg, 25 mg each, 30 count

Out & About offers these chemical free, all natural softgels that are a pale amber color and have a typical softgel consistency. Labeled at 25 mg each, these softgels tested at 32.1 mg of actual CBD content in each serving size of 1 softgel, which is a variance of 28% and well above the allowed 10% variance limit.

This amounts to 963 total mg of CBD in a 750 mg labeled bottle of 30 softgels. They tested free of THC at 0%. There are no specific uses recommended by the company.

Softgels with Melatonin, 750 mg, 25 mg each, 30 count

These individual softgels are quite small and a bit squishy, like any typical softgel product. They are green in color and easily distinguishable from the natural softgel offered by Out & About.

They are labeled as having 25 mg of CBD, and third party testing indicated 24.9 mg with 1 mg of added melatonin per recommended serving size of 1 softgel. The lab results for this product confirmed a total of 747mg of actual CBD per 750 mg labeled bottle of 30 softgels. These are recommended for use by the company at night, to aid and promote restful sleep.

Energy Sports Drink Mix, 62.5 mg, 12.5 mg each, 5 count

These drink mixes may have zero sugar, but there is sucralose and stevia sweetener and they have a highly sweet taste and it is challenging to drink the whole serving size of 1 packet. Consumers are instructed to add this powder to 12 to 24 oz of water or other beverage for oral, ingestible use.

These have an extra 120 mg of caffeine and 8 vitamins, including B12, added to the Out & About PCR hemp oil, for a labeled total of 12.5 mg of CBD per packet and 62.5 mg per box of 5 drink mix packets. Aloe leaf and ginseng are also ingredients, as well as artificial fruit flavors. The suggested use by the company is to boost energy naturally and help with post exercise soreness.

CBD Gummies, 750 mg, 25 mg each, 30 count

These assorted fruit flavored gummies have a soft consistency and are about the size of a nickel. These are recommended for oral use and are easy to chew. This product offers customers a convenient way to get a dose of CBD. They are vegan, organic, and do not contain any added sugar, so they are not overly sweet.

Suggested use by the company is vague, listing only a general purpose of achieving better personal health and wellness. Labeled at 25 mg per serving size of 1 gummy, these were independently verified at having 26.74 mg of CBD, which is a variance of 6.95% and under the 10% acceptable variance. The total CBD in this 750 mg labeled product is 697.8 mg, with a non detectable amount of THC confirmed at 0%.

CBD Mints, 300 mg, 10 mg each, 30 count

These round CBD isolate mints are about the size of a conversation heart candy, with a bit of that same chalky consistency and are white in color. They can easily be put under the tongue for sublingual use or can be used orally, and both methods are equally suggested by the company. They leave a residue in the mouth after use.

These CBD mints have a label serving size of 1 mint for 10 mg of CBD; the third party lab results showed 10.62 mg of actual CBD in the contents and 0% THC. This is a variance of 6.2% between the labeled 300 mg of CBD and the actual 318.6 mg of CBD verified by independent third party testing. The company’s suggested use is to use orally to curb bad breath with a naturally refreshing natural mint flavor.

CBD Pet Chews, 60 mg, 2 mg each, 30 count

These pet treats have a moist, soft consistency and do not stick together in the container. They are a dark brown color and are formulated by veterinarians for dogs 25 lbs and under, according to the company. Each chew is about the size of a typical small dog treat, and the serving size is 1 chew per 25 lbs of pet weight. The suggested uses listed by Out & About include helping the anxiety level of your pet, overall pet wellness, and concerns related to a pet’s aging and joint health.

After looking at the lab results for three sample batches of this product, including my particular batch number, the average quantity of CBD per chew is 1.72 mg, with 51.60 total mg of CBD per advertised 60 mg. This is a variance of 14%, which is higher than the 10% acceptable limit for CBD variance between the product label and the test results. There was 0% THC found. These pet chews are for oral use only.
